This component complements our Social and Economic Empowerment project and enrolls children under the age of five into pre-school to protect them from harmful traditional practices including FGM, neglect, abuse, exploitation and parental ignorance as well as monitor their growth from infancy to make sure that they are reaching their health and developmental milestones.
Once the child is enrolled, she is registered with the Alternative Rite of Passage Initiative which ensures that the child will not be circumcised by obtaining consent from the parents to monitor the child on a regular basis.
Parents of the enrolled child are encouraged to plant a tree as a symbol of their commitment to improve their child’s well-being while contributing to environmental restoration. This aspect links our Child welfare component to our Gender and Environment project.
