Prevention of Harmful Traditional Practices, including Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting

Child Welfare and Protection

This component serves a prelude to the our Alternative Rite of Passage Initiative. The daughters of our beneficiaries who are under the age of five are enrolled in the Child Welfare and Protection Project which provides a pre-school environment in participating villages to protect them from harmful traditional practices including FGM/C, neglect, abuse, exploitation and parental ignorance as well as monitor their growth from infancy to make sure that they are reaching their health and developmental milestones.

Once the girl is enrolled, she is registered with with the Alternative Rites of Passage initiative. Consent from the parents to monitor the child on a regular basis ensures she will not be circumcised.

Parents of the enrolled child are encouraged to plant a tree as a symbol of their commitment to improve their child’s well-being while contributing to environmental restoration. This aspect links our Child Welfare and Protection component to our Gender and Environment project.
