Observing World Immunization/ African Vaccination Week, 2024

Celebrated every year from 24-30 April, World Immunization/ African Vaccination Week aims to increase the use of vaccines and promote the reduction of vaccine-preventable diseases and deaths. Immunization provides protection against diseases including measles, rubella, polio, rotavirus, tetanus, diphtheria, human papilloma virus (HPV) and hepatitis B, among others. This year’s celebration coincides with the 50th anniversary of the World Health Organization’s Extended Programme for Immunization (EPI).

We join partners in The Gambia to celebrate this event by reinforcing the awareness activities at our health facilities on the importance of vaccination for all those at risk of vaccine-preventable diseases, including Covid 19. The week also provides us with the opportunity to advocate with decision-makers for political will and availability of the necessary vaccines.

Through our immunization program, we continue to provide routine vaccinations to pregnant women, infants and children under the age of 5 years as well as information and counselling to expecting parents.
