This campaign was initiated in 2002 and its main funding agency is the Italian Government, through UNICEF in some partner countries. Leading organization in the campaign is the Italian NGO, Organization for Women in development (AIDOS), in collaboration with eight African partner countries of which BAFROW is representing the Gambia.
The project, STOPFGMC was designed to intensify the global campaign against FGMC by disseminating and collecting relevant and researchable information to and from various stakeholders, political leaders, community leaders, those working actively in the field, parents etc. It also plays a vital role in assessing the role of the judiciary system in enforcing legislation prohibiting FGMC in countries that have not yet banned the practice.
To facilitate this, a web portal/site with English, French and, subsequently, Arabic has been created as a comprehensive tool to document and spread information concerning the various activities for the eradication of FGMC. It also aims to build concrete instruments to bring about change by reaching and involving different actors at international level and drawing attention on what is going on in Africa and in Europe regarding FGMC prevention.
