The Child Welfare Program

This provides suitable play and preschool environment for children age three to seven. These are children who have not yet been  enrolled in the formal school system. It monitors the children's health by keeping records of their weight, personal appearance  and behavior. The parents of these children meet occasionally and they are reminded to complete the immunization cycle of their  children. BAFROW examines the clinic card of each child to confirm its conformity to the MCH requirements. Children learn to eat  certain nutritious foods that have hitherto been considered as taboo. In addition, children who have been identified to go through  the new rites of passage are registered in this program where they are prepared for the ceremonies and other activities they will  have to undertake during the new passage rites.

The "My Baby Tree" Program

Similarly, when parents decide to enroll their children in the pre-school, a ceremony is organized in the village which involves the planting of a fruit tree, by the parents. This demonstrates their full commitment to the program. The growth of the tree/plant is monitored as much as the child is cared for. The child assumes responsibility to care for the plant when she is old enough to do so. The tree planting activity contributes to improving the environment, as well as inculcating a culture of environment al protection and management among children and adults. This program was introduced in the village of Sandeng based on community demand because there is no school in the area. The program also supports the community to lobby the local government authority to provide education facility for their children.
