Women's Empowerment

Through functional literacy, communities and women in particular have been empowered with knowledgde and skills that enables them to make their own decisions including protection of their sexual and reproductive rights

One of the main reasons, as shown from research, why Female genital mutilation continues is becausecircumcisers depend on it for their livelihood. Results of research showed that they would make use of an alternative form of earning income if they were assisted with some formof capital. BAFROW has therefore developed a strategy of transformingcircumcisers into skilled resource persons who will mobilize their counterparts away from harmful traditional practices and proceed into productive, self-sustaining income ventures.

The activities include skills development in food processing and preservation, petty trading and agro based related activities, as well as local health counselors. These also include business management and planning courses. So far, circumcisers that have been identified for identified for small loans have undergone business management courses in collaboration with the Indigenous Business Advisory service. Two of the transformed circumcisers now have their own bakeries, which serve their villages and their surrounding areas. They now take care of themselves and their families through this business venture.

Fatoumata Binta Mballow was a circumciser who lives in the village of Ndemban about 70 kilometers from Banjul with her husband Madieu Mballow and their six daughters; Isatou, Dadoo, Kadijatou, Mariama, Abibatou and Sirifo.

Madieu, Fatoumata's husband was unskilled making her the sole breadwinner of the family. She has always been responsible for the upkeep of her family, therefore the only way she thought she could make money at the time was by performing female genital mutilation/cutting. She gets a lot of gifts from the girls' families, which does not include the normal charges for circumcision. Some bring ram, clothes, foodstuff, etc. This left her with no option but to be content and satisfied with the practice. Read More ....
