The Foundation for Research on Womens Health, Productivity and the Enviroment (BAFROW) is a national non governmental organisation in The Gambia. It was founded in July 1990, and registered as an independentent charitable trust in March 1992. BAFROW ainms to complement governments development efforts through its social and economic empowerment programs inorder to improve the quality of life or people in targeted communities particularly the most vulnerable.
It is an organization that operates at both national and grassroots level. It provides social services for communities i.e Health care services (prevention, treatment and care) Gender-related programs including economis empowermenet for women and communities, Functional literacy; enviromenmtal behaviour change communication programs.
These activities are designed in the context of civic empowerment, people's participation and ownership. It is a process of transparency and accountability which involves communities taking charge in auditing their own systems and practices; identify and act on their roles, responsibilities, obligations and rights as leaders and citizensin relation to an identified problem which they want to address.
Using these approaches, BAFROW is creating models that serve as catalyst for social change within communities and facilitate a process of transparency and accountability in local, regional and national decision making processes
